It was a bright Monday morning. Around 6:30am, I received a message on my phone which read thus: there is a job vacancy at MTN Nigeria Ltd. for Fresh graduates. Submit your CV via mtnrecruits@ymail.com but remember to add below your CV ``my Oga at the top". The message had no meaning to me as I wasn't searching for job. More confusing was the phrase my Oga at the top.
I thought it was a mistake not until I logged into my twitter account.99% of the tweets had the hash tag my Oga at the top I became more confused when I saw a tweet by Daddy Adeboye which read: "My Oga at the top says all will be well."
At this juncture I jumped out of bed and rushed to meet a neighbour of mine who also happens to be a social media guru like me. I told him and he bursted out, laughing at my obvious ignorance.
He had already downloaded the video on his blackberry phone. I sat down and watched with great disappointment how a commandant of the Nigeria Security & Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) of a great state like Lagos found it difficult to state the correct website of his organization. My friend continued laughing nevertheless.
I was so sad and disturbed; I kept re-echoing the question. What is NSCDC website? Even an illiterate knows that anything that deals with the internet ends with .com; .org etc.
♍Ɣ kid sister, who is 5yrs is fond of stating her facebook username as adesinagrace.com because of the .com in facebook website that she has put to memory that anything online must have a .com.
If my little sister can know this, then how do we explain a man in his fifties that has climbed more than 14levels in his career to reach an exalted post of a commandant in a law enforcement agency?
Many articles have been written on this issue. Quite a number have blamed the man's misfortune on Channels TV staff for exposing the man's inadequacies as he had avoided the question twice before being floored. Many, on the other hand have blamed the man for incompetence.
This writer in his own view believes that the Oga at the top shame is a welcome development.
Far away from the humor it creates it has exposed the level of illiteracy in our country, Nigeria. Over the years the number of school attendance is at its all time lowest; billions budgeted for education have been ruthlessly embezzled.
It must be stated here that an illiterate man is neither a man that can't read nor write but an illiterate is a man that doesn't developed himself outside his discipline and environment.
The high level moral decadence in our society has shown to us that all is not well with our nation. From the leaders to the followers, the traits are visible. The nation first lady Is famous for her stray bullets which lead to the presidential order banning her from being interviewed by journalists ditto the president who last year made a public show of shame while speaking on a national television with the word I don't give a damn to answer questions bothering on his declaration of assets.
So why are we capitalizing on Shem Obafaiye's little mistake which can't be compared to a more suicidal statement my fellow widows by Mrs. Patience among her other grammatical postulations?
As you're reading this and basking in the euphoria of the man's mistakes I will like to ask you these questions: When last did you read? When last did u surf the internet for information? When last did you read material outside your discipline?
Bishop David Oyedepo said: "What you read today will determine what will happen to you in future." The reading culture among us is dying.
As a student studying banking & finance. How many textbooks do you have on your course? How many bank histories do you know before making jest of that innocent man? If your views are sought on issues bothering on the weather and climate won't u decline comments and refer the questionnaire to Geography students?
We have all sorts of dresses and shoes in our wardrobes but only few of us have library containing books on different courses and authors. We can't spend 100,000 naira to buy books yet we buy blackberry phone of over 100,000 naira, which I see as a misplacement of priority.
Some of us don't even bother to read newspaper, novels, and anthologies from scholars including spiritual books. These acts of negligence have reduced our intellectual ability, thus reducing us to a walking corpses academically & morally.
The Oga at the top phrase shouldn't be seen as a joke; rather it should be a moment of examining the ills and wrongs in our public service. Some people have maneuvered their way to posts they are not qualified to. Be operating from. Even the recruitment to these government agencies are not advertised but they keep recruiting people through unholy means as witnessed in Central Bank Of Nigeria where over hundreds of people were employed without an advert!
Some people have used the influence of powerful people to secure admission into the university to study courses they are not qualified for including you!
The certificates are based on connections, connections & connections. Leaders at all levels should give their subordinates free hand to work and not taking orders from them all the time before acting on issues, especially petty ones. Otherwise we can justify Mr. Shem for saying he can't give a website and his Oga at the top will give another.
I submit that merit should be encouraged in all we do in this country. Look for the best hand to do a job and not appointing people based on ethnicity, political affiliation or religious background. Our working force should be trained and retrained because you can't get something from nothing. And each and every one of us should develop ourselves mentally and morally by reading anything in print that comes your way because no knowledge is a waste.
